Scottish Country Houses 1600-1914

Classical houses like Hopetoun

Scottish Country Houses 1600-1914 by Ian Gow From great classical houses like Hopetoun to familiar castles such as Glamis and Craigievar, this work covers a range of building styles from the late Middle Ages onwards.

Great names of Scottish architecture

The work of the great names of Scottish architecture is also examined, including that of Sir William Bruce, William Adam, Robert Adam, William Leiper and Sir John Burnet.

Hopetoun House

Hopetoun House is one of the most splendid examples of Georgian architecture in Britain being the work of Scottish architects Sir William Bruce and William Adam. Hopetoun House has been the home of the Earls of Hopetoun, later created Marquesses of Linlithgow.
Hopetoun House, however, is owned and managed by an independent, charitable trust created in 1974 by the current Marquess and his father in order to preserve the House with its historic contents and surrounding landscape for the enjoyment and education of the public.

Glamis Castle

Glamis Castle has been the family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne since 1372, when Sir John Lyon was granted the thaneage of Glamis by King Robert II. In 1376 Sir John married the King's daughter, Princess Joanna. Since then Glamis Castle has been visited and lived in by many members of the Scottish and British royal families.

Craigievar Castle

Craigievar Castle has changed little since William Forbes, brother of the Bishop of Aberdeen, completed it in 1626. Craigievar Castle has been called the epitome of the Jacobean Renaissance in Scotland. The castle is an L plan building with a twist. The L plan was built upwards instead of sideways. Within its walls the collection includes an excellent show of family portraits and 17th-and 18-th century furniture. This perfect Scottish castle remains as unspoiled as it was when lived in by the Forbes-Sempill family.
Craigievar Castle is not open for tour buses and has limited access. Large tours were discontinued because the artwork on the walls and ceiling was suffering damage due to the number of people visiting.
