Loevestein Castle in The Netherlands is a sturdy 14th century fortress, nicely located in a region of rivers and surrounded by much scenic beauty. Loevestein Castle has an eventful past: as a medieval castle, a defensive work and as a state prison. A famous prisoner was Hugo de Groot (Grotius), doctor of law, who managed to escape from Loevestein Castle in 1621 in a book chest.

Nowadays, Loevestein Castle is a monument of great national interest and a museum. Loevestein Castle has a double moat, a munitions tower, soldiers' barracks, an arsenal and the Loevestein street, with houses which are now an exhibition area. The Loevestein Castle and the fortifications around it are regularly host to historical and cultural events. Loevestein Castle is always worth a visit.
