Pain Fitz John

Painscastle, 1066-1405 by Paul Martin Remfry Painscastle deals with the problem of the foundation of this castle probably by Pain Fitz John in the 1120's. To this end the early history of the Welsh cantref in which the castle stands is unraveled. This is followed by a recounting of the castle's turbulent and troubled history together with the history of the powerful, if unlucky, Tosny family who claimed the castle as their ancient right. The work includes the great battle fought at Painscastle in August 1198 between the princes of Wales under Gwenwynwyn and the Justiciar of England, Geoffrey fitz Peter.

British Castles Series

The first of the British Castles Series to be home-published was Clun Castle in 1994. This was a successful comprehensive history based solely on original Anglo-Welsh manuscripts. Since this 32 more followed making up the present collection in the British Castles Series. Professionals and individuals find them useful for their research and interest purposes in medieval history, archaeology, genealogy, and family and local history.
