The Building of Castle Howard by Charles Saumerezme-Smith

Complete study of Castle Howard

Designed as a complete study of the circumstances which led to the building of Castle Howard, the author describes the physical appearance of the architecture and gardens in relation to reasons underlying both the decision to build the castle and the architectural plans which developed.

Stately home

Castle Howard is a stately home in Yorkshire, England, 25 miles north of York. It is one of the very grandest private residences in the country. Most of Howard was built from 1699–1712 for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, to a design by Sir John Vanbrugh. It is not a true castle: the word is quite often used for country houses in England which were built after the end of the castle-building era and were not intended to have any military function. It has been the home of part of the Howard family for over 300 years.

Gardens

Castle Howard's 1,000 acres of Gardens are breathtaking all year, offering peace and tranquillity at every turn. The monumental landscape inspires with memorable views of the Temple of the Four Winds, the Mausoleum and New River Bridge, and on a clear crisp day views of the distant North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds can be enjoyed. On cold blustery days wrap up warm and explore our many footpaths.
