Biblical Rembrandt

In the context of his faith

The Biblical Rembrandt presents the human Rembrandt in the context of his faith. That faith can be studied only by an intense look at his paintings, etchings, and drawings depicting biblical persons, scenes, and moments. About Rembrandt's life, we know very little that is certain, but he has left us abundant testimony of his sensitive reading of the Bible.

For those who love the Bible

Written from the perspective of a biblical specialist who has pored over Rembrandt's testimony, Durham writes not for the art historian, but for those who love the Bible, for those who love Rembrandt, and for those who want to know more about the meeting of this Dutchman and his biblical text.

Christ Presented to the People

Rembrandt's largest etching and one of the three most famous works in his graphic oeuvre will grace Gallery 209 at The Saint Louis Art Museum this spring. The drypoint masterpiece Christ Presented to the People ("Ecce Homo") was purchased in January and will be on view by mid-May.

Scene from the Bible

Like many Rembrandt etchings, Christ Presented to the People portrays a scene from the Bible. In this composition, events described in Saint Matthew's gospel, Chapter XXVII, play out against a mammoth architectural backdrop.
