Million Little Lies

In late 2005 and early 2006, credible sources alleged that some or many events in his bestselling nonfiction memoir, A Million Little Pieces, are not true.
In September 2005, Oprah Winfrey chose A Million Little Pieces for her monthly bookclub.

Smoking Gun

On January 8, 2006, The Smoking Gun published "A Million Little Lies: Exposing James Frey's Fiction Addiction". The article alleges that James Frey fabricated large parts of his memoirs, including details about his criminal record and rehab experiences. One incident in the book that has come under particular scrutiny was a 1986 train-automobile collision in St. Joseph Township, Michigan that killed fellow students Jane Hall and Melissa Sanders.

Several news services have since picked up on the story. James Frey has dismissed the charges, saying “So let the haters hate, let the doubters doubt, I stand by my book, and my life,” and threatened to sue The Smoking Gun. Publishers Doubleday and Anchor Books have stood by James Frey in a joint statement.

"I feel duped," Oprah Winfrey said Thursday on her syndicated talk show. "But more importantly, I feel that you betrayed millions of readers." James Frey, who found himself booed in the same Chicago studio where he had been embraced in september 2005, acknowledged that he had lied.

A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard

A Million Little Pieces was published in 2003 and became a bestseller. In 2004, James Frey wrote My Friend Leonard, which continues where A Million Little Pieces left off.
